At first glance, a small self-driving robot navigating a classroom floor may not seem like a big deal. But for students enrolled in Computer Science Essentials , the learning happening behind the scenes is anything but small. Thanks to the forward-thinking of one of our teachers and financial assistance from an OVCEF Education Grant, students are gaining hands-on experience with VEX robotics and vision sensor technology , a critical component of today’s computer science and engineering fields. This grant provides updated vision sensors that allow students to fully participate in a hands-on way. Real-World Coding, Real-Time Problem Solving One-third of the Computer Science Essentials course is dedicated to coding self-driving vehicles (SDVs). Students learn how to program these vehicles to move along specific paths, recognize colors and shapes, and make decisions such as turning, stopping, or continuing forward — all based on visual input from a vision sensor. During a recent class, students focused on the coding portion of this project , running their programs, watching how the vehicle responded, and making adjustments when the outcome wasn’t what they expected. This process of testing, analyzing results, and refining code mirrors how real engineers work in the field. Understanding How Machines “See” Through this project, students gain a deeper understanding of how machines interpret visual information. They learn how vision sensors detect colors and shapes and how that data can be used to trigger specific actions. These concepts are foundational in fields such as robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and autonomous transportation. By working through these challenges, students aren’t just learning how to code — they’re learning how to think critically, troubleshoot problems, and apply logic in meaningful ways. Why This Grant Matters The vision sensors funded through this grant are essential to delivering the full curriculum. Without them, a significant portion of the course — including key concepts assessed on the end-of-course exam — would need to be removed. This grant ensures that students have access to the tools they need to succeed academically and explore future STEM pathways. Investing in the Future What starts as a small self-driving vehicle in a classroom can lead to careers in engineering, technology, and innovation. OVCEF Education Grants make it possible for students to engage in hands-on, future-focused learning experiences that prepare them for what comes next. If you’ve ever watched a student discover something new through art, you know how powerful hands-on creativity can be. Recently, I had the chance to stop by the Middle School art room to see that magic in progress — and it was all centered around a new art kiln , made possible through an Education Grant from Oley Valley Community Education Foundation . The kiln was just about ready to be put to work, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Students were in the middle of glazing their clay pieces, many featuring imaginative animal designs. What looks like one color before firing will transform completely once it goes into the kiln — something that always amazes students. Learning how glazes oxidize and change during the firing process adds a whole new layer of science, patience, and anticipation to the art experience. This kiln upgrade means students can now take their projects all the way from raw clay to finished ceramic artwork, experiencing the entire creative process. It encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and pride in seeing a project through from start to finish — skills that extend far beyond the art room. We’re also incredibly grateful to the Middle School PTO , who helped complete the setup by purchasing the kiln plates. Those plates may seem like a small detail, but they’re an essential part of making the kiln function safely and smoothly. It’s a great example of how collaboration helps turn a good idea into a fully realized learning opportunity. At OVCEF, we're proud to support projects like this - grants that don't just add equipment, but truly expand what's possible for students. This new kiln is already sparking creativity, curiosity, and excitement, and we can't wait to see the finished pieces (and proud smiles) that come out of it.

The Oley Valley Community Education Foundation (OVCEF) is excited to announce a new partnership with the Oley Valley Community Library as the official sponsor of Preschool Storytime, held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the library. Led by Ms. Parry, Preschool Storytime has become a beloved program for families with young children. Each month features a special theme, with new stories shared each week to spark imagination and encourage a love of reading. In addition to listening to the story, children enjoy a hands-on craft that ties directly into the week’s book. Crafts may be completed at the library or taken home to extend the fun and learning beyond storytime. Through this partnership, OVCEF is proud to support early literacy and creative learning opportunities for the youngest members of our community. By connecting children and families with engaging educational experiences, we continue our mission of enriching the lives of Oley Valley students and supporting lifelong learning. On Wednesday, May 21, we proudly awarded 12 scholarships totaling $36,000 to deserving members of the Oley Valley Class of 2025. Read on to learn a little more about the scholarships and the students who received them. $1,000 Sports Medicine Alumni Scholarship: Arabella Smith This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be attending an institution of higher learning to further their education in the field of sports medicine, exercise science or medicine with preference given to individuals pursuing careers in physical therapy or athletic training. While OVCEF helps to oversee and facilitate this scholarship, two Oley Valley Alumni, Kyle and Lauren Moore, fund, interview and select the recipient for this scholarship each year. We are pleased to announce the 2025 Sports Medicine Alumni Scholarship recipient is Arabella Smith . Arabella demonstrates a strong ambition to continue her education and enter the medical field. Her passion toward her intended major and career are exceptional and we are sure she will do well in the next phase of her education. We are thrilled to support Arabella as she pursues her degree and are excited to see her successes. She will be attending Delaware University to obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing, specializing in neonatal intensive care, eventually becoming a doctor of anesthesiology. $3,000 William S. Gotwals Memorial Scholarship: John Allmendinger This scholarship was created by Andrea (Gotwals) Boone and Summer (Gotwals) Teaford in memory of their grandfather, William S. Gotwals - a devoted farmer and businessman whose life was defined by hard work, integrity, and a deep connection to the land. In honoring his legacy, they aimed to support students who are pursuing higher education in agriculture and demonstrate leadership, purpose, and a strong commitment to the future of the field. Preference is given to students involved in the FFA, an organization their grandfather heavily supported for decades. John (J.T.) Allmendinger truly embodies the spirit of this scholarship. A standout leader in the Oley, PA FFA chapter since 2021, he now serves as Chapter President and was instrumental in the Oley Forestry team’s 1st place state finish and 11th place national ranking. He also earned a Silver individual placing at the FFA National Convention. J.T.’s passion for forestry and sustainability will continue at Penn College of Technology, where he plans to study Forest Technology. His interview reflected clarity, maturity, and a well-defined vision for his future—qualities that made him the clear and deserving choice for this award. $3,000 Positive Impact Scholarship: Aydan Cogan The nominees for this scholarship are made by Oley Valley School District faculty who recommend students based on the impact they have had on faculty and staff, their fellow classmates, how they help underclassmen, school and community spirit, and the impact they will have in their future. A committee of school faculty hold the interviews and select the recipient of this scholarship. This year’s Positive Impact Scholarship recipient, Aydan Cogan , truly embodies integrity, empathy, a strong work ethic, and school spirit. Even as a seventh grader, he stood out as a calm, kind, and hard-working role model amid the chaos of middle school. Now at Kutztown University, he continues to lead with positivity, perseverance, and purpose, making a meaningful impact wherever he goes. 3 - $3,000 Sally Breidegam-Miksiewicz Memorial Scholarships: Maeve Freed Benjamin DeBalko Arabella Smith There are 3 of these scholarships awarded each year in memory of Sally Breidegam-Miksiewicz to students who will be attending an institution of higher learning. This year's award recipients are: Maeve Freed is an impressive and driven student who will attend Bloomsburg University as part of the Biomedical Sciences Pre-Med Program and Honors College, with plans to continue on to Geisinger Medical School to become a gynecologist. Active in athletics and several school clubs, she also serves as Vice President of her class and as the senior class representative to the school board. Maeve currently works at Frecon Farms and has a deep passion for biology, especially Human Body Systems. Inspired by medical challenges she and her sister faced, Maeve is pursuing a career in medicine with clarity and purpose. Her professionalism during the interview, familiarity with OVCEF's mission, and recognition of its impact reflect her commitment to education and community. Ben Debalko is a well-rounded and accomplished student who exemplifies the values of an OVCEF scholarship recipient. A K–12 Oley Valley attendee, he has made a lasting impact through his leadership as captain of the varsity basketball team, treasurer of FBLA, and active participant in programs like PAW Squad, the Youth League, and the Model Senate. He also works as a cart attendant at Golden Oaks Golf Course and is known for his dedication, maturity, and drive. Ben plans to double major in Accounting and Finance at King’s College, with the goal of becoming a financial advisor to combine his passion for finance with helping others. His appreciation for close-knit communities and honest feedback about expanding business curriculum demonstrate thoughtful insight and a commitment to growth. Arabella Smith is an outstanding and poised student who will attend Delaware University to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing with a specialization in neonatal intensive care, ultimately aiming to become a doctor of anesthesiology. A biomedical track student and secretary of HOSA, she is also the chief editor of the yearbook, a member of the track and field team, and currently works at Taylored Physical Therapy. Since transferring to Oley from Berks Catholic in her junior year, Arabella has embraced Oley's PTLW program and expressed a thoughtful suggestion for more hands-on applications of its curriculum. Her strong moral compass, inspired by her parents, and her involvement in a student-led vaping and mental health study demonstrate her integrity, leadership, and passion for healthcare. $3,000 Resiliency Scholarship: Libby Sanders This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be furthering their education at an institution of higher learning, and who has demonstrated resilience in the face of a challenge, as told through an essay required when applying for this particular scholarship. Libby Sanders embodies resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to helping others. Despite facing significant personal challenges, she has remained focused on solutions, allowing her experiences to shape rather than define her. Balancing two jobs while actively contributing to her school and community, she is involved in marching band, Girl Scouts, HOSA, and the National Technical Honor Society. Her passion for service and healing has inspired her to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, and she is committed to Keuka College’s accelerated program to fulfill that dream. Her strength, perseverance, and unwavering positivity make her a truly inspiring and deserving recipient. 4 - $3,000 OVCEF Scholarships: Caleb Teeters Brooke Schaffer Leah Walters Eva Glick These scholarships are awarded to seniors who will be attending an institution of higher learning to continue their education. Caleb Teeters is an exceptional student headed to the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a dual-degree in Computer Science, with plans to take AI courses at Carnegie Mellon. With a 1550 SAT (including a perfect math score), a 4.48 GPA, and recognition as a TSA State Finalist, he is a high-achiever with clear goals in AI and cybersecurity. Caleb demonstrates strong leadership as Class President, TSA President, and through his involvement in the principal selection process, all while balancing academics, summer work, and contributions to the school band and Oley Fair. Inspired by his first-grade teacher, he values the support of OVCEF—especially its engineering initiatives—and his innovative capstone project, a ratchet system for rollator users, showcases both compassion and ingenuity. Brooke Schaffer left a lasting impression with her authenticity, eloquence, and resilience—qualities that shone through as she shared her journey, achievements, and passion for both art and engineering. A committed University of Pittsburgh student pursuing civil engineering, she brings a creative edge to STEM, exemplified by her award-winning artwork, which earned Best in Show at the 2024 Oley Fair. Beyond her impressive accomplishments, Brooke captivated us with her genuine spirit and strength, openly discussing the challenges she’s overcome. Her thoughtful awareness of OVCEF’s impact on students and the community reflects her deep appreciation for opportunity and support. We are excited to follow her inspiring journey as she boldly pursues her goals. Leah Walters is a passionate and driven student committed to Kansas State University, where she will major in Animal Science with a focus on reproduction and minor in Agribusiness. A tuition and dual-enrollment student who transferred to OVHS for its strong Agriculture and FFA programs, Leah has built a life rooted in livestock breeding, inspired by a childhood goat and supported by her hardworking, resilient family. She has raised over 60 goats, bred a Grand Champion steer for the Oley Fair, and aspires to create herbal supplements to improve livestock health. Overcoming shyness through FFA public speaking, Leah has become a decorated speaker and a dedicated leader, serving as NHS President, FFA Vice President, and VP of the Berks 4-H Livestock Club. She balances work at Hoffman’s Produce and Esbenshade’s Greenhouses with volunteering for several local causes. Leah’s deep appreciation for OVCEF and its support of veterinary and agricultural initiatives makes her a standout scholarship recipient with a bright future in animal science. Eva Glick is a passionate and impactful future educator committed to Kutztown University for Early Education PreK–4, entering with 12 college credits earned through the Early College Academy. She already brings her calling to life as a student intern, mentoring first and fifth graders daily, and believes deeply in the power of small moments to build student confidence and growth. Eva balances academics with leadership and service, working in her family’s small business, teaching dance to children ages 6 to 18, and serving as Student Council Secretary, Marching Band President, and Thespian Society Co-President. She volunteers through Big Brothers Big Sisters, PAW Squad, and Common Ground Recovery Church, and is also a peer tutor. Fluent in ASL, Eva has even translated performances to make them more inclusive. With hopes to teach at Oley Elementary, Eva exemplifies dedication, compassion, and a heart for community. $5,000 Phillip Fleck Memorial Scholarship: Ammoni Lockhart This scholarship, in memory of Phillip Fleck, is awarded annually to a student who has successfully created the Biomedical Track in high school and will be attending an institution of higher learning to further their education in a biomedical field. Ammoni Lockhart is a focused and driven student committed to pursuing a Physician’s Associate degree at Alvernia University. A member of the PLTW Biomedical Engineering program and an active participant in the school’s music program, she also serves as President of Student Council and Vice President of National Honor Society. Since transferring to Oley in fourth grade, Ammoni has embraced leadership roles and valuable internships, including the Reading Tower Health program. Poised and thoughtful in her interview, she praised her Oley experience while suggesting more culturally diverse course offerings. Influenced deeply by her parents’ examples of leadership and kindness, Ammoni demonstrated strong familiarity with OVCEF’s mission and programs and expressed eagerness to get involved further.

You will see a demonstration of these skills and will have lots of opportunities to try these skills yourself. Bring on the fun! Book of the Week: "So You Want to Learn: Juggling"  July 25: Yocum Institute The Yocum Institute will feature an original play written for young audiences by a student from Albright College. The play takes a student struggling to find inspiration to start an art project. You will go on a fantastic journey, turning paintings into portals to a magical and far off land. Book of the Week: "On Stage" August 1: Party Animal Express This is an entertaining animal program that introduces you to animals through educational facts and stories. You will learn about their natural lives and how they interact with people. You will have the opportunity to pet some of the animals. Book of the Week: "Animal Alphabet" The Summer Learning Program is held in Weidner Hall in Friedens UCC Church, above the library, and it begins promptly at 10:30am. We appreciate the church allowing us to use their space so that more families can enjoy the Summer Learning Program! Please keep in mind that the Summer Learning Programs are designed for school-age children, and presentations may not be of interest to younger children.
