A Million Reasons to Celebrate

On March 27, 2026, something truly special happened at the Oley Valley Community Education Foundation’s 30th Anniversary Gala. In a room filled with supporters, educators, alumni, and community members, we shared a milestone that represents decades of generosity, vision, and belief in our schools:

OVCEF has officially awarded over $1,000,000 in Education Grants.

That’s one million dollars invested directly into enhancing educational opportunities for students right here in the Oley Valley School District. One million dollars that has helped bring ideas to life, supported classroom innovation, and expanded learning far beyond what traditional funding allows.

While $1,000,000 is certainly worth celebrating, what matters most is what that number represents.

It’s:

Classrooms transformed through hands-on learning tools
Teachers empowered to try new and creative approaches
Students gaining access to experiences they otherwise wouldn’t have had

From cutting-edge technology like Anatomage tables and VR welding simulators, to creative spaces like the OVMS TV Studio, to meaningful learning experiences like field trips to the 9/11 Memorial Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Museum—these grants have made a real impact.

And sometimes, it’s the smaller projects that leave the biggest mark—like the One School, One Book program that puts books directly into the hands of young readers, sparking a lifelong love of learning.

This milestone didn’t happen overnight—and it certainly didn’t happen alone.

For 30 years, OVCEF has been supported by:

Education Grant in Action: VEX Robotics and Vision Sensor Technology

At first glance, a small self-driving robot navigating a classroom floor may not seem like a big deal. But for students enrolled in Computer Science Essentials , the learning happening behind the scenes is anything but small.

Thanks to the forward-thinking of one of our teachers and financial assistance from an OVCEF Education Grant, students are gaining hands-on experience with VEX robotics and vision sensor technology , a critical component of today’s computer science and engineering fields. This grant provides updated vision sensors that allow students to fully participate in a hands-on way.

Real-World Coding, Real-Time Problem Solving

One-third of the Computer Science Essentials course is dedicated to coding self-driving vehicles (SDVs). Students learn how to program these vehicles to move along specific paths, recognize colors and shapes, and make decisions such as turning, stopping, or continuing forward — all based on visual input from a vision sensor.

During a recent class, students focused on the coding portion of this project , running their programs, watching how the vehicle responded, and making adjustments when the outcome wasn’t what they expected. This process of testing, analyzing results, and refining code mirrors how real engineers work in the field.

Understanding How Machines “See”

Through this project, students gain a deeper understanding of how machines interpret visual information. They learn how vision sensors detect colors and shapes and how that data can be used to trigger specific actions. These concepts are foundational in fields such as robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and autonomous transportation.

By working through these challenges, students aren’t just learning how to code — they’re learning how to think critically, troubleshoot problems, and apply logic in meaningful ways.

Why This Grant Matters

The vision sensors funded through this grant are essential to delivering the full curriculum. Without them, a significant portion of the course — including key concepts assessed on the end-of-course exam — would need to be removed. This grant ensures that students have access to the tools they need to succeed academically and explore future STEM pathways.

Investing in the Future

What starts as a small self-driving vehicle in a classroom can lead to careers in engineering, technology, and innovation. OVCEF Education Grants make it possible for students to engage in hands-on, future-focused learning experiences that prepare them for what comes next.

Fired Up for Creativity: A New Art Kiln at the Middle School

If you’ve ever watched a student discover something new through art, you know how powerful hands-on creativity can be. Recently, I had the chance to stop by the Middle School art room to see that magic in progress — and it was all centered around a new art kiln , made possible through an Education Grant from Oley Valley Community Education Foundation .

The kiln was just about ready to be put to work, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Students were in the middle of glazing their clay pieces, many featuring imaginative animal designs. What looks like one color before firing will transform completely once it goes into the kiln — something that always amazes students. Learning how glazes oxidize and change during the firing process adds a whole new layer of science, patience, and anticipation to the art experience.

This kiln upgrade means students can now take their projects all the way from raw clay to finished ceramic artwork, experiencing the entire creative process. It encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and pride in seeing a project through from start to finish — skills that extend far beyond the art room.

We’re also incredibly grateful to the Middle School PTO , who helped complete the setup by purchasing the kiln plates. Those plates may seem like a small detail, but they’re an essential part of making the kiln function safely and smoothly. It’s a great example of how collaboration helps turn a good idea into a fully realized learning opportunity.

At OVCEF, we're proud to support projects like this - grants that don't just add equipment, but truly expand what's possible for students. This new kiln is already sparking creativity, curiosity, and excitement, and we can't wait to see the finished pieces (and proud smiles) that come out of it.

OVCEF Partners with the Oley Valley Community Library to Sponsor Preschool Storytime

The Oley Valley Community Education Foundation (OVCEF) is excited to announce a new partnership with the Oley Valley Community Library as the official sponsor of Preschool Storytime, held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the library.

Led by Ms. Parry, Preschool Storytime has become a beloved program for families with young children. Each month features a special theme, with new stories shared each week to spark imagination and encourage a love of reading. In addition to listening to the story, children enjoy a hands-on craft that ties directly into the week’s book. Crafts may be completed at the library or taken home to extend the fun and learning beyond storytime.

Through this partnership, OVCEF is proud to support early literacy and creative learning opportunities for the youngest members of our community. By connecting children and families with engaging educational experiences, we continue our mission of enriching the lives of Oley Valley students and supporting lifelong learning.

As the 2025-2026 school year begins, the Oley Valley Community Education Foundation (OVCEF) is proud to announce that we have awarded more than $135,000 in Education Grants to our district for this school year. These grants are made possible through the generosity of our community and the creativity of our dedicated teachers and staff.

Investing in Innovation

Education Grants go beyond the regular curriculum to bring unique and hands-on learning opportunities into our classrooms. Each project is designed to inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and give students the chance to explore new ideas and skills.

Backyard Bracket – Designed for casual players and families. Each team must include at least one player under the age of 18 – perfect for parents and kids or teen duos!

�� Prizes and fun await – and don’t forget, this event is the perfect warm-up for the beloved Oley Fire Company’s Peach & Ice Cream Festival happening later that day! Meet the 2025 OVCEF Scholarship Award Recipients

On Wednesday, May 21, we proudly awarded 12 scholarships totaling $36,000 to deserving members of the Oley Valley Class of 2025. Read on to learn a little more about the scholarships and the students who received them.

$1,000 Sports Medicine Alumni Scholarship: Arabella Smith

This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be attending an institution of higher learning to further their education in the field of sports medicine, exercise science or medicine with preference given to individuals pursuing careers in physical therapy or athletic training. While OVCEF helps to oversee and facilitate this scholarship, two Oley Valley Alumni, Kyle and Lauren Moore, fund, interview and select the recipient for this scholarship each year.

We are pleased to announce the 2025 Sports Medicine Alumni Scholarship recipient is Arabella Smith . Arabella demonstrates a strong ambition to continue her education and enter the medical field. Her passion toward her intended major and career are exceptional and we are sure she will do well in the next phase of her education. We are thrilled to support Arabella as she pursues her degree and are excited to see her successes. She will be attending Delaware University to obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing, specializing in neonatal intensive care, eventually becoming a doctor of anesthesiology.

$3,000 William S. Gotwals Memorial Scholarship: John Allmendinger

This scholarship was created by Andrea (Gotwals) Boone and Summer (Gotwals) Teaford in memory of their grandfather, William S. Gotwals - a devoted farmer and businessman whose life was defined by hard work, integrity, and a deep connection to the land. In honoring his legacy, they aimed to support students who are pursuing higher education in agriculture and demonstrate leadership, purpose, and a strong commitment to the future of the field. Preference is given to students involved in the FFA, an organization their grandfather heavily supported for decades.

John (J.T.) Allmendinger truly embodies the spirit of this scholarship. A standout leader in the Oley, PA FFA chapter since 2021, he now serves as Chapter President and was instrumental in the Oley Forestry team’s 1st place state finish and 11th place national ranking. He also earned a Silver individual placing at the FFA National Convention. J.T.’s passion for forestry and sustainability will continue at Penn College of Technology, where he plans to study Forest Technology. His interview reflected clarity, maturity, and a well-defined vision for his future—qualities that made him the clear and deserving choice for this award.

$3,000 Positive Impact Scholarship: Aydan Cogan

The nominees for this scholarship are made by Oley Valley School District faculty who recommend students based on the impact they have had on faculty and staff, their fellow classmates, how they help underclassmen, school and community spirit, and the impact they will have in their future. A committee of school faculty hold the interviews and select the recipient of this scholarship.

This year’s Positive Impact Scholarship recipient, Aydan Cogan , truly embodies integrity, empathy, a strong work ethic, and school spirit. Even as a seventh grader, he stood out as a calm, kind, and hard-working role model amid the chaos of middle school. Now at Kutztown University, he continues to lead with positivity, perseverance, and purpose, making a meaningful impact wherever he goes.

There are 3 of these scholarships awarded each year in memory of Sally Breidegam-Miksiewicz to students who will be attending an institution of higher learning. This year's award recipients are:

Maeve Freed is an impressive and driven student who will attend Bloomsburg University as part of the Biomedical Sciences Pre-Med Program and Honors College, with plans to continue on to Geisinger Medical School to become a gynecologist. Active in athletics and several school clubs, she also serves as Vice President of her class and as the senior class representative to the school board. Maeve currently works at Frecon Farms and has a deep passion for biology, especially Human Body Systems. Inspired by medical challenges she and her sister faced, Maeve is pursuing a career in medicine with clarity and purpose. Her professionalism during the interview, familiarity with OVCEF's mission, and recognition of its impact reflect her commitment to education and community.

Ben Debalko is a well-rounded and accomplished student who exemplifies the values of an OVCEF scholarship recipient. A K–12 Oley Valley attendee, he has made a lasting impact through his leadership as captain of the varsity basketball team, treasurer of FBLA, and active participant in programs like PAW Squad, the Youth League, and the Model Senate. He also works as a cart attendant at Golden Oaks Golf Course and is known for his dedication, maturity, and drive. Ben plans to double major in Accounting and Finance at King’s College, with the goal of becoming a financial advisor to combine his passion for finance with helping others. His appreciation for close-knit communities and honest feedback about expanding business curriculum demonstrate thoughtful insight and a commitment to growth.

Arabella Smith is an outstanding and poised student who will attend Delaware University to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing with a specialization in neonatal intensive care, ultimately aiming to become a doctor of anesthesiology. A biomedical track student and secretary of HOSA, she is also the chief editor of the yearbook, a member of the track and field team, and currently works at Taylored Physical Therapy. Since transferring to Oley from Berks Catholic in her junior year, Arabella has embraced Oley's PTLW program and expressed a thoughtful suggestion for more hands-on applications of its curriculum. Her strong moral compass, inspired by her parents, and her involvement in a student-led vaping and mental health study demonstrate her integrity, leadership, and passion for healthcare.

$3,000 Resiliency Scholarship: Libby Sanders

This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be furthering their education at an institution of higher learning, and who has demonstrated resilience in the face of a challenge, as told through an essay required when applying for this particular scholarship.

Libby Sanders embodies resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to helping others. Despite facing significant personal challenges, she has remained focused on solutions, allowing her experiences to shape rather than define her. Balancing two jobs while actively contributing to her school and community, she is involved in marching band, Girl Scouts, HOSA, and the National Technical Honor Society. Her passion for service and healing has inspired her to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, and she is committed to Keuka College’s accelerated program to fulfill that dream. Her strength, perseverance, and unwavering positivity make her a truly inspiring and deserving recipient.

These scholarships are awarded to seniors who will be attending an institution of higher learning to continue their education.

Caleb Teeters is an exceptional student headed to the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a dual-degree in Computer Science, with plans to take AI courses at Carnegie Mellon. With a 1550 SAT (including a perfect math score), a 4.48 GPA, and recognition as a TSA State Finalist, he is a high-achiever with clear goals in AI and cybersecurity. Caleb demonstrates strong leadership as Class President, TSA President, and through his involvement in the principal selection process, all while balancing academics, summer work, and contributions to the school band and Oley Fair. Inspired by his first-grade teacher, he values the support of OVCEF—especially its engineering initiatives—and his innovative capstone project, a ratchet system for rollator users, showcases both compassion and ingenuity.

Brooke Schaffer left a lasting impression with her authenticity, eloquence, and resilience—qualities that shone through as she shared her journey, achievements, and passion for both art and engineering. A committed University of Pittsburgh student pursuing civil engineering, she brings a creative edge to STEM, exemplified by her award-winning artwork, which earned Best in Show at the 2024 Oley Fair. Beyond her impressive accomplishments, Brooke captivated us with her genuine spirit and strength, openly discussing the challenges she’s overcome. Her thoughtful awareness of OVCEF’s impact on students and the community reflects her deep appreciation for opportunity and support. We are excited to follow her inspiring journey as she boldly pursues her goals.

Leah Walters is a passionate and driven student committed to Kansas State University, where she will major in Animal Science with a focus on reproduction and minor in Agribusiness. A tuition and dual-enrollment student who transferred to OVHS for its strong Agriculture and FFA programs, Leah has built a life rooted in livestock breeding, inspired by a childhood goat and supported by her hardworking, resilient family. She has raised over 60 goats, bred a Grand Champion steer for the Oley Fair, and aspires to create herbal supplements to improve livestock health. Overcoming shyness through FFA public speaking, Leah has become a decorated speaker and a dedicated leader, serving as NHS President, FFA Vice President, and VP of the Berks 4-H Livestock Club. She balances work at Hoffman’s Produce and Esbenshade’s Greenhouses with volunteering for several local causes. Leah’s deep appreciation for OVCEF and its support of veterinary and agricultural initiatives makes her a standout scholarship recipient with a bright future in animal science.

Eva Glick is a passionate and impactful future educator committed to Kutztown University for Early Education PreK–4, entering with 12 college credits earned through the Early College Academy. She already brings her calling to life as a student intern, mentoring first and fifth graders daily, and believes deeply in the power of small moments to build student confidence and growth. Eva balances academics with leadership and service, working in her family’s small business, teaching dance to children ages 6 to 18, and serving as Student Council Secretary, Marching Band President, and Thespian Society Co-President. She volunteers through Big Brothers Big Sisters, PAW Squad, and Common Ground Recovery Church, and is also a peer tutor. Fluent in ASL, Eva has even translated performances to make them more inclusive. With hopes to teach at Oley Elementary, Eva exemplifies dedication, compassion, and a heart for community.

$5,000 Phillip Fleck Memorial Scholarship: Ammoni Lockhart

This scholarship, in memory of Phillip Fleck, is awarded annually to a student who has successfully created the Biomedical Track in high school and will be attending an institution of higher learning to further their education in a biomedical field.

Ammoni Lockhart is a focused and driven student committed to pursuing a Physician’s Associate degree at Alvernia University. A member of the PLTW Biomedical Engineering program and an active participant in the school’s music program, she also serves as President of Student Council and Vice President of National Honor Society. Since transferring to Oley in fourth grade, Ammoni has embraced leadership roles and valuable internships, including the Reading Tower Health program. Poised and thoughtful in her interview, she praised her Oley experience while suggesting more culturally diverse course offerings. Influenced deeply by her parents’ examples of leadership and kindness, Ammoni demonstrated strong familiarity with OVCEF’s mission and programs and expressed eagerness to get involved further.

KooKoo's show focuses on interaction with the children in the audience just as much as it is about performing magic! Come to the library to see a cartoon magic show.

You will have firsthand experience in learning how to perform certain juggling skills. You will see a demonstration of these skills and will have lots of opportunities to try these skills yourself. Bring on the fun!
Book of the Week: "So You Want to Learn: Juggling"

July 25: Yocum Institute
The Yocum Institute will feature an original play written for young audiences by a student from Albright College. The play takes a student struggling to find inspiration to start an art project. You will go on a fantastic journey, turning paintings into portals to a magical and far off land.
Book of the Week: "On Stage"

August 1: Party Animal Express
This is an entertaining animal program that introduces you to animals through educational facts and stories. You will learn about their natural lives and how they interact with people. You will have the opportunity to pet some of the animals.
Book of the Week: "Animal Alphabet"

The Summer Learning Program is held in Weidner Hall in Friedens UCC Church, above the library, and it begins promptly at 10:30am. We appreciate the church allowing us to use their space so that more families can enjoy the Summer Learning Program!

Please keep in mind that the Summer Learning Programs are designed for school-age children, and presentations may not be of interest to younger children. The library appreciates your help in keeping your children seated and quiet during the programs.

OVCEF’s “Tools of the Trade” Program Supports Oley Valley BCTC Students

At the Oley Valley Community Education Foundation (OVCEF), we believe that no student should have to put their education or career goals on hold due to financial hardship. That’s why we’re proud to support our Tools of the Trade Program —an initiative that helps Oley Valley High School students attending the Berks Career and Technology Center (BCTC) cover the cost of essential items such as books, uniforms, and tools.

For students pursuing hands-on, career-oriented programs at BCTC, the cost of materials and supplies can add up quickly. These items are critical to their success, and we are committed to ensuring that every Oley Valley student has the opportunity to thrive—regardless of their financial situation.

This year, OVCEF was honored to assist four Oley Valley students through Tools of the Trade grants. These students are working hard in diverse and in-demand programs, including:

Heavy Equipment Technology

Their dedication and drive are inspiring, and we are proud to be a small part of their journey.

Education Grant in Action: Vet Tech Table

At OVCEF, we're committed to supporting innovative learning opportunities for students that prepare them for future success. One of our recent Education Grants brought cutting-edge technology to Oley Valley High School's Agriculture Program - the Vet Tech Anatomage Table.

This interactive 3D table is a game-changer for students interested in veterinary science. It allows them to explore detailed, life-sized images of animal anatomy, including organs, body systems, and the effects of diseases and injuries. With a touch screen interface, students can rotate, zoom, and dissect virtual animal models, gaining a deeper understanding of how the body works - something traditional textbooks just can't provide.

One of the most exciting features of this technology is its diagnostic capabilities. The table presents real-world medical cases, showing the effects of injuries or illnesses on an animal's body. Students can analyze symptoms, work through possible causes, and develop critical thinking skills as they move from effect to diagnosis - just like they would in a real veterinary setting.

Plus, with a built-in quiz feature, students can test their knowldge in real-time, reinforcing what they've learned and preparing them for future studies in veterinary medicine, animal science, and related fields.

This is just one example of how OVCEF is making a difference in students' lives. By funding state-of-the-art educational resources, we're ensuring that Oley Valley students have opportunities to explore their passions, gain hands-on experience, and build the skills they need for a successful future.

OVCEF Approved Funding for 18 Education Grants for the 2024-2025 School Year

The Oley Valley Community Education Foundation (OVCEF) is proud to share it's funding of 18 innovative educational grants for the 2024-2025 school year. These grants will provide Oley Valley students with opportunities to explore and learn beyond the standard curriculum, thanks to the innovative and forward-thinking ideas of the district's dedicated teachers and staff members.

From hands-on STEM projects to creative arts programs and beyond, each grant reflects the passion of our educators to inspire students and enhance their learning experiences in meaningful ways. These projects aim to open doors for students, spark curiosity, and provide skills that will benefit them well beyond the classroom.

Below you will find a list of the funded grants, with a brief description of each project and the school it will benefit:

Sustaining OVSD Food Sources

Oley Valley High School

The purpose of this project is to expand OVHS food growing programs to include egg and chicken production. Students currently grow and donate leafy greens and vegetables to our HS cafeteria and community food banks as part of food and ag science courses. This program will expand that initiative to allow OVHS students to have access to protein production through ag classes.

9/11 Memorial and Museum Field Trip
Oley Valley Middle School

Our 7th grade students are born well after the tragic events of September 11, 2001 , and therefore have no memory of this horrific day. Seventh graders possess the maturity to be taught what happened that day, who lost their lives, and who the many heroes that emerged that day, which this field trip will allow them to explore through a guided tour of the 9/11 Museum and Memorial.

STEM Hands-On Learning with Hydroponics

Oley Valley Elementary School

This project combines STEM learning with hydroponics to grow herbs, greens, flowers, and more. Students will have the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to learn about plant growth, nutrition, and sustainability. Activities and learning will vary between the grade levels from learning about plants, understanding hydroponics including interpreting pros and cons of using it, experimenting with germination of plants, and creating evidence based proposals for where the plants need to be placed within the unit. By the end of the year, all students, grades k - 5 will have an increased understanding of plant biology and hydroponics as an alternative, environmentally efficient way of growing plants.

Unified Sports: Bocce

Oley Valley High School

Unified Bocce brings people of all abilities together, promoting inclusion, teamwork, and friendships through the power of sports. Unified Bocce pairs studnets with and without intellectual disabilities to play together on the same team, creating meaningful connections while having fun.

The Art of Expression: A Conference for Emerging Writers
Oley Valley High School

The purpose of this project is to give students instruction from experts in the field of creative writing and publishing, allowing them to earn a certificate of completion which can be added to college applications, resumes, etc. They will also be given the chance to network with industry professionals and arrange potential mentorship opportunities.

Video Club - Auditorium Audio/Visual Expansion Project

Oley Valley Middle School

This project will fully utilize the newly-renovated MS auditorium and provide a more robust, fully-immersive experience for performances. In addition, the project will develop and utilize a trained staff of students to use their technical and artistic skills to make unique performances throughout the year.

Career Partnership Program

Oley Valley High School

Career exploration and development requires a strong collection of industry partners serving as mentors, presenters, site visit hosts, and advisors. This project will create a brand to support consistent messaging as we formalize a strong Career Partnership Program at Oley Valley School District.

One School, One Book

Oley Valley Elementary School

One School, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across an entire school community. Each student receives a copy of a selected book, and every family reads that book at the same time. The shared reading experience is maximized by presenting enriching activities at school that enable children to share and experience the characters and world of each book.

TSA Build Kits
Oley Valley Middle School & High School

This project will s upport young engineers as they design and build to understand core concepts and practices of engineering and design as part of TSA chapters at OVMS and OVHS.

Understanding Culture through Movement

Oley Valley Middle School

Students will discover the history of the British Empire bringing this sport around the world in social studies class. The key focus will be on the impact it had on the Indian subcontinent. The Bollywood movie, Lagaan, which is a historical fiction piece , focused on the conflict British Empire's rule on an Indian village and is resolved through a game of cricket. Next, students will learn the rules of this sport and actually play this game in their physical education classes.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Trip

Oley Valley High School

The project is to develop and implement an annual field trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., as part of an extension to the curriculum for the course History of the Holocaust. The study of this sensitive, yet profound topic, needs to be applied in a relevant fashion in order to best meet the needs of students within a 21st century perspective. By embracing varied student strengths (auditory, tactile, and visual), a visit to the museum will enhance these abilities for use in the classroom and beyond.

Teachers in the Parks (TIPs)

Oley Valley Elementary School

TIPs is a summer reading program that provides students with ongoing literacy support over the summer. Instead of reviewing literacy skills in a classroom, students enjoy reading and learning skills outside. Students learn in groups and have the opportunity to engage in reading skills while enjoying time with their peers in a summer camp-like environment.

Career Academy Remodel for Workforce Skills and Preapprenticeship

Oley Valley High School

The purpose of this project is to provide the Career Academy students and others with a complete hospitality and life skills setting to practice necessary skills for independence as well as workforce skills to prepare for pre-apprenticeship and internship opportunities. The setting w ill include a full kitchen, living area, and laundry room.

Aevidum

Oley Valley Middle School

Aevidum is a club/team of students who focus throughout the year on small but meaningful ways to promote mental health and wellbeing among students and to provide a positive and safe environment where all students feel connected.

Autistic/Emotional Support Rooms

Oley Valley High School

The purpose of our project is to establish a meaningful space for students with autism and emotional needs to feel safe and supported. As students transition from middle school to high school, many changes take place, until now, we have not had this type of space to provide safety and comfort at the high school.

Ag Ed Science Lab
Oley Valley Elementary School
The Ag Ed Science Lab provides meaningful and effective hands-on STEM-focused experiments inside the mobile science lab for students in first through fifth grades. This program supports the elementary school’s agricultural education and meets state standards in science and technology and environment and ecology while doing it.

Drones in the Classroom

Oley Valley Middle School

This project brings coding to life by introducing students to programmable drones. Through hands-on activities, students learn to code as they program their drones. This engaging approach not only makes learning fun, but also builds valuable STEM skills, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and a love for technology.

Biomedical Learning Experiences 3.0

Oley Valley High School

This program continues to expand, attracting more students each year as they see connections and value in biomedical explorations as it relates to careers across various industries. Our biomedical pathway serves students considering medical/nursing school, biotechnology, and medical courses as part of a career pathway as well as those interested in taking one or two classes to explore a career cluster. The expansion of this project enables deeper science learning and supports the shift to phenomena focused learning that will carry our students and our school into the future.

OVCEF is incredibly proud to support these innovative projects and the educators who designed them. By encouraging students to think creatively, engage in hands-on learning, and explore new interests, these grants are helping to make the Oley Valley School District a place where learning truly comes to life.

Students Provide Feedback of Visit to 9/11 Museum & Memorial

On December 11, 2024, Oley Valley's 7th grade students had the incredible opportunity to visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. This meaningful experience was made possible through an OVCEF Education Grant, allowing students to explore one of the most significant events in recent history and reflect on its impact.

After the visit, the students expressed their gratitude in heartfelt thank-you letters to the Oley Valley Community Education Foundation. Their reflections highlighted just how insightful and thought-provoking the trip was to them.

Here's what some of the students had to say:

"Thank you for the opportunity to visit NYC and tour the 9/11 Museum...While visiting the 9/11 Museum, I saw 5% of the North Tower's antenna on display. I learned about the man who worked on the antenna and kept working until the tower fell so that communication could continue. The museum was quiet so it felt like a respectful place to remember all those who lost their lives...I had been to NYC before but many of my classmates hadn't." ~ Brayden T.

"Thank you for providing my grade with the wonderful opportunity to visit the beautiful city of New York...The museum was very interesting and I learned a lot...It was surprising to me how many people decided to help others first before helping themselves...I really appreciate that you chose to fund this trip for us." ~ Riley F.

"I believe this trip is very valuable because it gives an opportunity to show young people and older people the history of 9/11. It is an amazing opportunity. It gives people an emotional connection and it shows you how big this event was. It also shows you how the United States of America persevered through this tough time. It shows how strong of a country we truly are and we will stay that way no matter what happens in the future." ~ Jesiah B.

"Everything was very interesting, but probably the most appealing was the elevator motor. It was very interesting to learn about it and the story behind it, where there was a guy who was trapped with people in the elevator in the 9/11 attacks, he used his tools and skilled resourcefulness to save him and the other people 5 min before the building came down." ~ Paul P.

"Being at the 9/11 museum really gave me a different perspective of what happened on that day. Seeing everything also made me a little emotional thinking about all the lives that were lost whether they were working in the towers, 911 officers, firemen, or just watching the whole thing happen was really sad...I think this trip was valuable because it really helps you think differently about what happened that day." ~ Madison A.

Education Grant in Action: Observing Chromosomes

Using tools purchased with funds from an OVCEF Education Grant, Mr. Moll's Principles of Biomedial Science class recently had the chance to dive into the fascinating world of chromosomes through a hands-on lab. Using tools like microscope slides, pipettes, and stains, students learned how to prepare and analyze cells, gaining practical skills essential for future careers in the medical field.

During the lab, the students carefully dropped cells from pipettes onto microscope slides, aiming to break the nucleus so the chromosomes inside could be exposed. They then used dye to make the chromosomes visible under the microscope. After they completed this portion, Mr. Moll explained how this process connects to real-world applications, such as analyzing karyotypes (visual representations of an individual's complete set of chromosomes). These analyses are often used in high-risk pregnancies, such as when a woman over the age of 35 is expecting, to identify potential chromosomal abnormalities.

The students explored actual karyotype, determining whether the chromosome came from a male or female and identifying chromosomal abnormalities. This activity gave tehm a deeper understanding of how biology is applied in real-life medical scenarios.

In addition to the science, the lab also focused on critical foundational skills that studnets will use repeatedly in the medial field. They practiced the proper use of protective gear, including lab aprons and safety glasses, and learned how to safely remove medical gloves - an essential step in maintaining a sterile environment.

This lab is a prime example of how OVCEF Education Grants provide students with opportunities to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning that goes beyond the textbook. It's experiences like this that prepare students for future success in STEM and medical careers.

We're proud to support these educational opportunities and are excited to see the next generation of scientists and medial professionals devloping their skills right here in the Oley Valley.

Glick's Poinsettia Show is a holiday tradition you don’t want to miss!

With over 15,000 poinsettias on display, live music, festive wreaths, and Christmas magic at every turn, it’s a feast for the senses. This year’s theme, “Christmas Through a Child’s Eyes,” captures the wonder and joy of the season beautifully.

The show runs through December 7th and picks up again December 9th–11th, from 12 PM to 8 PM. Best of all? There’s no admission fee—just plenty of holiday cheer!

These hard-working students join us at each monthly meeting, bringing a fresh perspective and valuable insights from their fellow classmates, and they play an essential role in the work we do at the Oley Valley Community Education Foundation.

As Student Representatives, Samantha and Morgan bridge the gap between the students and OVCEF, keeping us in touch with the needs, interests, and feedback of their peers. Their participation in meetings allows them to provide invaluable input on the grants and programs we support, ensuring that we remain closely aligned with the needs of Oley Valley students. This partnership allows OVCEF to have a direct pulse on how our grants and programs impact students and, in turn, how we can continue to improve.

Samantha and Morgan aren’t just attending meetings—they’re actively involved in showcasing the impact of OVCEF in our community. Education Grant in Action: Hydroponics Unit

One of the Education Grants we funded this year is a Hydroponics Unit for the Elementary School. Students in Mrs. Roman’s classes are growing plants using this unit. They’ve been tracking the growth through photos and measurements, learning about how to care for the plants, and testing the water’s pH levels. This project allows students to take a hands-on approach to learn about plant growth, nutrition and sustainability. They've even formed hypotheses about how the lack of rain might be affecting the pH level in the tap water.

By the end of the year, students will have an increased understanding of plant biology and hydroponics as an alternative, environmentally efficient way of growing plants.

2024 "Swing Fore Education" Golf Tournament

On Monday, October 23rd, we held our 2nd Annual "Swing Fore Education" Golf Tournament - a resounding success thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors and the enthusiasm of our players. The event brought together community members, local businesses, and supporters who all played a vital role in driving our mission forward.

Each sponsor, player, volunteer and partner made an invaluable impact. Their commitment ensures that we can continue funding programs and initiatives that directly benefit the students, resients, employees and alumni of the Oley Valley School District. This support allows us to expand educational opportunities that might not otherwise be available.

Education Grant In Action: ELISA Experiment

Thanks to an Education Grant, students in Mrs. Scholl's Medical Interventions class had an exciting opportunity to dive into a real-world scientific experiment—the ELISA test! This lab, part of the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science Pathway curriculum, provided students with a hands-on experience using tools like microplates and pipettes to perform an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The ELISA test is an essential technique in the medical field, used to detect diseases by identifying specific antibodies or antigens in patient samples. This method helps diagnose conditions such as meningitis, HIV, Lyme disease, and more.

During the experiment, the students carefully followed each step, observing a visible color change in the microplates, which signaled a positive result for the condition being tested. It was truly inspiring to see these students engage in this practical learning experience, applying what they’ve learned in the classroom to an experiment that mirrors real-life scenarios in the medical field. These types of labs not only build critical thinking and problem-solving skills but also introduce students to possible career paths in healthcare and biomedical science.

We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated teachers who constantly seek opportunities to prepare students for life beyond high school. Their efforts, combined with the support of individuals and businesses that contribute to the Oley Valley Community Education Foundation (OVCEF), make experiences like this possible.

Summer Learning at the Oley Valley Community Library

The Oley Valley Community Library once again had a great lineup of programs for the Summer Learning Program this summer.

There were 239 attendees throughout the 8-weeks of summer learning, who enjoyed learning yoga, performing a gummy worm dissection, learning how to juggle, watching a performance by Yocum Institute, laughing out loud at the comedy performed by Ridiculous Nicholas, and watching and helping with science experiments.

The Oley Valley Community Education Foundation was proud to be the financial supporter of the library's Summer Learning Program for the 6th year in a row, and we can't wait to see what the library plans for next summer!

Education Grant in Action: Orchestra Electrified Instruments

If you were in attendance at the recent Mosaic Concert held by the Oley Valley High School Music Department, you were treated to an unforgettable evening showcasing remarkable musical talent! Among the captivating performances was a rendition of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" by members of the Orchestra, featuring electronic string instruments made possible through a previous OVCEF Education Grant.

These instruments have not only enriched the musical experience for students but have also provided them with the unique opportunity to connect with the music they listen to daily. Last week we had the pleasure of presenting our bus drivers with a Dunkin' Donuts gift card as a token of our appreciation at their Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast. It was a small gesture, but carries immense appreciation for their hard work, commitment, and the invaluable service they provide day in and day out. We recognize and appreciate all they do to ensure safe transportation for our students. It was our way of saying thank you for their dedication to a job well done.

Registration is now open for the 13th Annual Zackon 5K Run & Walk and 1-mile Fun Run. This in-person event will take place in the picturesque Oley Valley on Saturday, April 20th, 2024. The day-of-race registration table opens at 8 AM and the race begins at 9 AM. Fun Run will begin at 9:10 AM. Lynx Courtyard Brick Wall is Complete

The Lynx Courtyard is almost complete. All that is left to do is get the electricity hooked up so the wall is illuminated at night, install the benches, and complete the landscaping. Some of those projects will not be finished until spring, but we wanted to make sure you knew that the brick wall in the Lynx Courtyard is complete and able to be visited and viewed at the Oley Valley High School.

We'd love for you to share your pictures with us of you with your brick! Please email your photos to us at ovcef@ovsdpa.org , as we will be sharing some of them on our social media channels throughout the year.

Please also stay tuned, as we are planning a small dedication event in the spring once the final work has been completed.

Education Grant in Action: Live Performance of the Pennsylvania Philharmonic

Thursday, October 26, 2023, was a truly magical day for the Oley Valley 6th grade band and middle school orchestra students! The students had the incredible opportunity to attend a live performance by the Pennsylvania Philharmonic at Boyertown West Middle School.

The experience was not only a feast for their ears but also a valuable lesson for these budding musicians. Witnessing the beauty and precision of a professional orchestra, the students could connect the dots between their current learning and their musical aspirations It was a chance to understand the full potential of their instruments and refine their listening skills, all of which will undoubtedly make them stronger musicians in the future.

We are grateful to our generous community members whose support fules our educational initiatives. It's moments like these that inspire and shape the future of our young students.

2023 Cornhole Tournament

We couldn't have asked for a better morning for our 4th Annual Cornhole Tournament, which coincided with the Oley Fire Company's Annual Peach Festival.

New this year was an Air Mail contest, where players had just 4 chances to sink their bags in the Air Mail hole. It was a success, and we look forward to continuing it next year.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Oley Valley High School students enrolled in the History of the Holocaust course participate in an annual field trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. The visit to the museum encourages students to explore the profound and sensitive topic of the Holocaust through auditory, tactile, and visual means. This museum visit serves as a foundation and inspiration for a Holocaust-centered class project that follows the field trip.

OVES Sensory Trail

The creation of a sensory trail in the main hallways of the Oley Valley Elementary Center has transformed that space into a dynamic social and emotional learning and support area for students. PA Mobile Agricultural Science Laboratory

Oley Valley Elementary Center students in Grades 2 through 5 have the opportunity to perform hands-on science experiments emphasizing various aspects of agriculture. The students use twelve work stations in a mobile science laboratory provided by the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture and supervised by a Pennsylvania certified instructor. These pupils eagerly anticipate the week-long series of lessons and experiments offered in the mobile laboratory.

Digital Media and Storytelling in the Secondary Classroom

Supporting Bioengineering and Medical Career Pathways Through OVHS: Virtual Modeling for Real World Biology and Engineering Lessons.

This program develops partnerships with medical, bioengineering, and 3D imaging professionals to benefit and support Oley Valley High School students’ career pathway explorations. Prominently featured is the use of an Anatomage virtual dissection lab that allows students in the Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Science, Biology, Agricultural Engineering, and Principles of Biomedical Science courses to examine cadavers and specimens through 3D virtual modeling and imagery. This project places world class medical technology in our high school classrooms to offer depth of learning commonly available only at leading medical universities.

As the result of a team effort among Oley Valley music instructors, the iPad Pro is integrated into multiple music classroom projects, and chorus rehearsals are streamlined. With music uploaded onto the iPad Pro and a single click on the AirTurn foot pedal, pages of music are turned. The iPad is also used to teach students how to further their musical training with apps that review rhythm, note reading, and sight singing. The implementation of this technology makes paperless music classes possible.

Kinesthetic Learning with National Geographic’s Giant Map

Learning in Oley Valley’s seventh grade World geography classes is enhanced through the use of National Geographic’s Giant Map, which allows students to move freely as they pursue their studies. During a typical unit of study of a continent, students, examine, label, and draw numerous maps. The giant map takes students out of the classroom so that they may engage in exploration and play games relating to various geographical locations.

Oley Valley K-8 STEM Coding and Robotics Program

This project extends the coding and robotics initiative begun with Oley Valley Elementary Center students in 2018-2019 to Grades 6, 7, and 8 at the Oley Valley Middle School. The program provides opportunities for students to explore various programming languages, including MIT’s Scratch, LEGO Mindstorms, Apple’s SWIFT, Autodisk Inventor LT, Sketch Up, and Apple’s IMovie. A continuum of students who are interested in joining the Oley Valley School District’s LEGO League is established; LEGO robotic building teams and competitive opportunities to enhance STEM-related skills are offered to students.

Exploring Human Geography Through Taste

North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania—these are the areas that seventh-graders at Oley Valley Middle School study in their World Geography course. During the study of each of these regions one day is set aside to explore the cuisine of the individual area. Assisted by guests from the Oley Valley community with personal ties to these geographical locations, students prepare food common to these regions in the kitchens of the former Family and Consumer Science room.

It is fantastic to see programs we’ve funded benefiting the Oley Valley community this summer. The OVES Super Summer STEM Camp developed super heroes featured Crime vs. Science, Physics in a Flash and many more awesome activities for students enrolled in K-8.

We also sponsored the Oley Valley Community Library Summer Learning Program, a 9-week initiative including visits from Lehigh Valley Zoo, Folk’s Butterfly Farm, The Venom Institute, Yocum Institute and others. It has been wonderful to see so many families attending these programs.

We love seeing equipment we’ve funded through the teacher grant program in action! 3D bio printing is a technology being used in tissue engineering and exploratory biological media to develop complex tissue structures. On Wednesday, May 21, we proudly awarded 12 scholarships totaling $36,000 to deserving members of the Oley Valley Class of 2025. Read on to learn a little more about the scholarships and the students who received them.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be furthering their education at an institution of higher learning, and who has demonstrated resilience in the face of a challenge, as told through an essay required when applying for this particular scholarship.

At OVCEF, we're committed to supporting innovative learning opportunities for students that prepare them for future success. One of our recent Education Grants brought cutting-edge technology to Oley Valley High School's Agriculture Program - the Vet Tech Anatomage Table.

Plus, with a built-in quiz feature, students can test their knowldge in real-time, reinforcing what they've learned and preparing them for future studies in veterinary medicine, animal science, and related fields.
